On May 11, 2023, the legal community and the Towson community as a whole mourned the loss of a true pillar, as Dennis J. Psoras peacefully passed away after battling a long illness. In his final moments, Dennis was surrounded by his beloved family and friends, a testament to the profound impact he had on those around him. Born on February 22, 1929, Dennis's remarkable journey spanned decades and left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
Dennis's early years were marked by academic prowess and determination. After attending Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he furthered his education at Towson Teachers College. A driven student, he engaged in student teaching at Kenwood High while pursuing his studies at Towson, earning his degree in just two years. He then embarked on a swift ascent through the academic world, graduating with honors and as the class valedictorian from the Mount Vernon School of Law (now the University of Baltimore). Demonstrating exceptional dedication, he completed law school in a mere 18 months and was admitted to the bar in 1960.
For an impressive 63 years, Dennis practiced law with unwavering commitment, primarily at 608 Baltimore Ave in Towson. His early legal journey saw him working alongside associates Stanley Radcliffe and Nicolas Pistolas. As his career flourished, he extended his guidance and mentorship to young lawyers, forming lasting friendships with numerous judges. A pivotal chapter of his journey came when he was joined by his nephews, George Jr. and Gregory Psoras, sharing the camaraderie of the legal world. Yet, it was with his son, James D. Psoras, that Dennis experienced his happiest years, practicing law side by side until the end of his life.
Beyond his legal achievements, Dennis was a remarkable athlete, earning the moniker "the Golden Greek" for his powerful and finely sculpted physique. His prowess shone brightly in soccer, crew, and wrestling, leading him to be inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1983. His wrestling triumphs were particularly notable, securing titles such as the State and Mason-Dixon championships. A veteran of the Korean War, he served with honor in the United States Coast Guard.
In 1960, Dennis embarked on a journey of love and companionship when he married his childhood sweetheart, Demetra. Their union bore the fruits of a beautiful family, including three children - James, Stephanie, and Thomas - as well as seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dennis's career was a testament to his commitment to the Towson community he cherished. Yet, beyond his professional accolades, he embodied the roles of friend, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He lived his life as a teacher, a poet, and a patriot, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide generations to come.
